On September 26, 2022, Japan Premium Vegetable Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as JPV) and Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran (hereinafter referred to as UNPAD), agreed to jointly conduct a demonstration test of high-yield and year-round cultivation technology for high-quality strawberries, and signed a joint research agreement.。

JPV has been working on the "Establishment of Strawberry Cultivation Technology in Asian Monsoon Regions" (hereinafter referred to as "this project"), a project adopted by the

“Research intension and promotion program to create innovation” of the Bio-oriented
Technology Research Advancement Institution, aiming to establish a strawberry cultivation
system in tropical and subtropical regions with high temperature and humidity. The
demonstration of high-yield and year-round cultivation technology for high-quality
strawberries in Southeast Asia is the main goal of this project.

Strawberries are in great demand not only in Japan but also in Southeast Asian countries.
However, the production area of strawberries is limited to mountainous areas because
strawberries prefer cooler climates. In addition, production in Indonesia has dropped
significantly due to the spread of diseases in the production areas.

 On the other hand, unlike
in Japan, low sugar content and flavorless varieties are grown. Therefore, the current
situation is that the demand is not being met adequately in terms of both yield and quality.
In this joint research, a greenhouse at UNPAD will be renovated to match the IT
Greenhouse* specifications, which have been developed and improved through this project,
and advanced cooling and lighting technologies will be applied to realize a cultivation
environment suitable for strawberry cultivation even in hot and humid regions. The
closed-type seedling raising system will be used to grow high-quality seedlings to realize the
high-yield, year-round cultivation of Japanese strawberry varieties in Indonesia’s hot and
humid climate. At the same time, further optimization of the cultivation system/technology
will be made for the local market in Indonesia.

Through this joint research

JPV and UNPAD will establish high-yield, year-round
cultivation technology for high-quality strawberries in hot and humid regions, thereby meeting the great demand for strawberries in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries.
After the completion of this project, JPV plans to proceed with full-scale social
implementation and commercialization based on the technologies demonstrated in this joint research and our knowledge of optimized greenhouse systems as well as cultivation technologies JPV’s mission is to realize stable production of vegetables even under harsh environments by integrating Japanese agricultural and industrial technologies so as to supply safe and tasty Japanese premium vegetables to the world against global warming.

【*IT Greenhouse】

Greenhouse

IT Greenhouse is a plant factory type intelligent greenhouse that can be used in hot and
humid environments, developed as part of the “Development of Asian Monsoon Plant
Factory System,” an R&D model project based on the accumulation and utilization of
knowledge, which was the predecessor project of this project. Advanced environmental
control makes it possible to cultivate tomatoes, strawberries, and other fruit and vegetable
crops even in hot and humid regions. In this project, we are further optimizing the IT
greenhouse for strawberry cultivation.
